India and England go head to head in the first of four Test matches this week and I for one already have the alarm set.

Getting up for a 4am start may seem daunting, but when you get to take in the first morning of a Test match between two top teams, it is worth it.

England of course have a very tough start, but they have drawn in India with a much weaker team and if the likes of Kevin Pietersen click, they have a chance.

A lot will come down to the spinners of course. Not only how the English batsman face spin, but how the England bowlers perform.

On the batting side of it, I urge the top order not to think too much about it. Have your plans, but don’t have your obsessions. Play each ball as it comes and enjoy the success your natural game can bring.

Then, on the flip side, it is all about Graeme Swann who England need at his best. Something he hasn’t been at for a few months now.

Supporting him, in my opinion, should be Samit Patel. Monty Panesar is a possibility, but I think his inclusion affects the whole England team.

He doesn’t seem to assist any type of winning mentality and let’s face it, when he played last winter England were hammered in Pakistan.

So, my team would be -

Cook

Compton

Trott

Pietersen

Bell

Patel

Prior

Bresnan

Broad

Swann

Anderson

Come on England.

Mark Cavendish is a shining light for cycling and someone I have a massive amount of respect for.

Not only is he the best in the world at what he does, but he offers excellent insight. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind on the controversial issues and is the type of character that can bring new fans into the sport.

Dominating the headlines recently has been Lance Armstrong of course and I wrote a piece for Talking Sports this week which stated Cavendish’s views on Armstrong, doping in cycling and the 2013 Tour De France.

One thing I will say is that cycling isn’t always a sport I have been into. My parents always raved about it, but until the last couple of years – I never paid too much attention.

This has changed a great deal in the last couple of years though and it has a lot to do with the fact that I am now a Mark Cavendish fan. Bradley Wiggins is an popular figure too of course and along with Chris Hoy and the Olympic spirit, these guys are making cycling trendy.

So, bizarrely, as cycling faces its most controversial time – I am at my most interested. Genuinely excited for the 2013 Tour – which is the 100th and arguably most important ever – I have a sport to add to the growing list of ones I love.

When it comes to the controversy, I believe Cavendish that the sport is now clean. This is a sport that is more high profile now than ever before, certainly in the UK, and hopefully the next few months will bring some more positive headlines.

Perhaps with Cavendish dressed in yellow, something which might suit him very well indeed. If he is a representation of where cycling sits right now, then I think the sport will be just fine.

Norwich City are back. Thanks to the 1-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday, the Premier League season can finally begin.

The fact that Saturday was the first time I had watched Norwich’s highlights on MOTD says it all really doesn’t it?

Prior to the weekend, it had been a miserable start to the season, but on Saturday everything came together.

Arsenal were poor, but Norwich contributed to this. Stopping the threat of Santi Cazorla was key and as a team, Norwich defended superbly.

Then, when it came to it, the home side had more chances with Grant Holt taking one of them to secure the points.

He has now scored three goals in as many games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal no less. One season wonder? I don’t think so.

It wasn’t all about Holt though. Other stand out performers were Sebastian Bassong, Alexander Tettey and Anthony Pilkington.

Then, the main man – Wes Hoolahan. He is a little genius and should always be in the team. Our creative spark, hopefully Chris Hughton now recognises how much he makes Norwich tick.

Now it is onto the next three games – Villa away (Hello Mr Lambert), Stoke at home and Reading away.

Another win or two and we really can start being more positive about what the season can bring.

Love it.

I wrote my first blog for Norwich City blog My Football Writer last week. It looked back on the fantastic season of Paul Lambert and his man.

Here is a snippet -

“As soon as it emerged that Alex McLeish was set for the sack at Aston Villa, tongues were wagging and you can see why. Lambert would be the perfect choice for the Midlands club and would do a fantastic job – no arguments about that.

Would Lambert want to go to Villa Park though? Well, it seems nobody knows what he is thinking and this is nothing new. Who can ever pick the starting eleven each week for example?

Put another way, Lambert is his own man and always will be. When he left Colchester United, people said ‘Why would he go to Norwich? They are in a mess.’ The same can be applied to Villa now, but it doesn’t mean anything with regards to what Lambert will do.

We need to stop pretending we know what will happen with Lambert’s future. Nobody other than the man himself knows what he is thinking. Don’t be fooled otherwise by the ‘Isn’t it a backward step?’ or ‘He wants to be closer to Scotland’ brigade.

We should just enjoy the summer – as much as we can – and conclude that whatever happens, happens.”

Believe it or not, the cricket season is underway and I had the pleasure of covering Norfolk for the Eastern Daily Press last week.

Unfortunately, it was washed out at the half-way stage – as much of the season has been so far, but it was good to be back at the home of Norfolk Cricket again.

You can see the online version of my report here.

More to come this summer!
